Easy and Simple steps on how to wear a Saree
- by Saher Bhatia

Welcome to our guide on how to wear a saree. Saree, also known as sari, is a beautiful and elegant attire worn by women in India and other parts of South Asia. It is a versatile garment that can be draped in many different ways, making it suitable for a range of occasions. Whether you're attending a wedding, a cultural event, or just adding a touch of traditional charm to your wardrobe, learning how to wear a saree is an essential skill.
At first glance, draping a saree might seem daunting, but with a little practice and patience, you can master this timeless art. In this guide, we will take you through some easy and simple steps on how to wear a saree, so that you can look and feel your best.
Step 1: Choose the Right Saree
The first step in wearing a saree is to choose the right one. Sarees come in a variety of fabrics, designs, and colors, so it's essential to choose one that suits your body type, skin tone, and occasion. If you're new to sarees, it's best to start with a silk saree which is easier to drape and carry. As you become more comfortable, you can experiment with different fabrics and styles.
Step 2: Prepare Your Blouse and Petticoat
Before you start draping your saree, you need to prepare your blouse and petticoat. Your blouse should fit snugly and be of the right length, so it doesn't show under your saree. Your petticoat should match the color of your saree and be tied tightly around your waist.
Step 3: Begin Draping the Saree
To start draping your saree, tuck one end of the saree into your petticoat on your right hip and wrap it around your waist, till it comes back to your navel. Ensure that the saree is not too high. Ideally, your feet should not be visible from under the sari hem. You can use a safety pin to fix it into place at this stage, but the petticoat should be secure enough to hold it in place.
Tip: Wear your heels before you start wearing your saree.
Step 4: Make the Pallu
The pallu is the loose end of the saree that you drape over your shoulder. To make the pallu, take the other end of the saree and wrap around your back and let it drop over your left shoulder. You can also bring it around your back and over your right shoulder to the front. Adjust the length of the pallu at this point and secure it with a pin to your blouse or drop it over your arm for a more relaxed look.
Step 5: Make the Pleates
Now take the loose fabric of saree in the front and make pleats, about 5-6 inches wide. Once you've made the pleats, tuck them in your petticoat, slightly to the left of your navel. Secure your pleates with the petticoat with the help of a safety pin.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Once you've draped your saree, you can add some finishing touches. You can wear jewelry such as bangles, earrings, and necklaces to compliment your saree. You can also apply makeup to enhance your features and complete your look.
Congratulations! You've now learned how to wear a saree. With a little practice, you'll be able to drape your saree with ease and confidence, and make a statement at any event.
